‘…where memory pools accumulate.’

<note to self>

Power poleit’s ironic that as i was reading about our dependence on power, the power goes out. for several hours. but it came back on. whew! good thing it wasn’t winter. oh sure, the gas for the furnace may work, but what about the blower, or the thermostat, or…. well, i’m glad it’s nearly summer, and now it’s back on.

the upside of down

Bringing people and machines together ‘creates those valuable synergies … [and] is one of the reasons we build places like the World Trade Center.’ But it’s not just the physical building we create, nor is it isolated. In the wake of 9/11 ‘flowed raw emotion–grief, anger, horror, disbelief, fear, and hatred. It was as if we were all wired into one immense, convulsing, and reverberating neural network.’ the upside of down, 120-121.

‘Forever JoyceCarolOatesafter, you will recognize those places–previously invisible, indiscernible–where memory pools accumulate. All the waiting areas of hospitals, hospital rooms, and, in particular, those regions of the hospital reserved for the very ill: Telemetry, Intensive Care. You will not wish to return to these places, where memory pools lie underfoot, as treacherous as acid.’–Joyce Carol Oates, after the death of her husband of 47 years, Raymond.
