<note to self>

Berkeley Heights NJ woodswhen i go triking, sometimes i stop under the old trees in the cemetery. the silent gravestones and somber mood are quite a contrast to the kids outdoors at the school just down the hill. i can hear them. i also hear traffic on king st and noises from the suburbs, usually lawnmowers. the mute water tower towers over everything.

the other day we went to the tiny marsh (see friday). one of the best parts of going to the marsh was driving thru the stillness of the country. however, the birds weren’t so quiet. no lawnmowers, tho.

Rachel-CarsonIt’s the birthday of Rachel Carson (1907-1964). ‘Her best-selling book about the dangers of pesticides, Silent Spring, is one of the most influential books in the environmental movement. She wrote: On the mornings that had once throbbed with the dawn chorus of scores of bird voices there was now no sound; only silence lay over the fields and woods and marsh.‘ It led to the ban of DDT. Today, however, birds face many threats and their song is disappearing once again.
