Three_Gorges_Dam_Finishedthe chinese have dammed the yangtze river with the three gorges dam, the largest human construction ever, that drowned dozens of cities and hundreds of towns, but lifting millions out of poverty. creating power from dams emits no climate-warming smog and creates no nuclear waste. however, the habitats of animals are lost forever. or are the needs of humans more important?

Astronaut Strawberries 2we bought california strawberries. couldn’t wait for local strawberries. but they were, not surprisingly, relatively tasteless. also, coming from california, they have a huge carbon footprint. next year, we’ll wait for the local ones. they’ll be worth the wait. remember when patience was a virtue?

bee pollinatingin the sixties, the 3 Bs were bach, brahms, and the the beatles. now they’re birds, bees, and bats–pollinators. ‘pollinators are responsible for 1 out of 3 bites of food we take each day, and yet pollinators are at critical point in their own survival. many reasons contribute to their recent decline. we know for certain, however, that more nectar and pollen sources provided by more flowering plants and trees will help bird pollinatingimprove their health and numbers. increasing the number of pollinator-friendly gardens and landscapes will help revive the health of bees, butterflies, birds, bats and other pollinators across the country.’ get your garden ready by making it bee-friendly. here are some tips (tx, sh).

reenchantment-of-the-worldreading the reenchantment of the world: ‘quantum mechanics, for example, or certain types of ecological research–have not made any significant dent in the dominant mode of thinking. that mode can best be described as disenchantment, nonparticipation, for it insists on a rigid distinction between observer and observed.’ (16-17)

kingsolverIt’s American novelist Barbara Kingsolver‘s (1955) birthday. ‘She and her family decided to spend a year eating only local foods (except for coffee, grains, and olive oil). Kingsolver and her family grew their own food, learned how to can tomatoes, and made cheese. They also had to care for and eat their own livestock, which proved difficult at times. Kingsolver said, “You can leave the killing to others and pretend it never happened or you can look it in the eye and know it.” ‘
