george martinGeorge Martin (1926-2016), who died this week, was sometimes referred to as the fifth Beatle, for he was no mere producer, he was an innovator and greatly aided their sound with his classical training and his willingness to explore. For example, for the solo in the middle of Penny Lane, he scored the unusual piccolo trumpet, which required an overdub, something rare in the Sixties.

International Women’s Day–heard on the CBC: women earn 72¢ for every dollar men earn and it’s getting worse. in canada! it’s like feminism never happened. yesterday i came across the american national museum of women in the arts, ‘the only major museum in the world solely dedicated to recognizing women’s creative contributions.’ why? (pictured is fanny sanín’s acrylic no. 7 from the national museum of women in the arts)

dnt.la.bird.deaths.wafb.640x360susan read a story about a syncrude flaring causing thousands of bird deaths (tx, sh). it concludes: ‘Whatever the number is [of annual bird deaths] linked to natural gas pales in comparison with what feral cats do…. Does that mean we should just forget about it, because it’s just a drop in the bucket? I don’t think so.’

susan to yet another tribute show. ‘elton’ this time. not her choice–she’s working. actually, she said it was pretty good, more of a concert and less of a re-enactment. but they’re popular. i suspect they’re fuelled by nostalgia (pictured: the real elton–before fame, and more recently).
