COP21

<note to self>

a mntn n a manin the face of the grand scheme of things, i fear that the human can be seen as insignificant, for our culture considers nature as separate from the human and as something other, as something to be possessed and dominated. maybe our culture should have bowed to native or buddhist ways. in buddhism you try to keep in mind more the grand scheme of things, less human concerns. however, maybe in other things the grand scheme matters less and human needs are more immediate soupkitchen like working in a hospital emergency or a soupkitchen or a shelter. i dunno. what’s it going to be? the grand scheme of things or the human? maybe it’s both. maybe having a grand scheme helps you weather human storms. maybe, far from being separate and insignificant, humans are *part* of the grand scheme of things.

Lionel_Lemoine_FitzgeraldThe Group of 7 (1920-1933) Plus 2

LeMoine FitzGerald (1890-1956) ‘was the only member of the Group of Seven to be based in western Canada. His landscapes and still-lifes were drawn from his immediate surroundings–the view of the back lane outside his house; a potted plant on the windowsill…. [In 1932 he was] invited to join the Group Of Seven’.

arthur c clarkeIt’s the birthday of Arthur C Clarke (1917-2008). He said, ‘I have great faith in optimism as a guiding principle, if only because it offers us the opportunity of creating a self-fulfilling prophecy. So I hope we’ve learnt something from the most barbaric century in history–the 20th. I would like to see us overcome our tribal divisions and begin to think and act as if we were one family. That would be real globalization.’

cop21 logoDiane Beckett, Sierra Club Canada’s Interim Executive Director, summarizes COP21: ‘Delegates agreed to a long-term goal of limiting average global warming to 1.5° and achieving zero greenhouse gas emissions by the second half of the century.

mckenna‘Canada made important contributions to the negotiations, with Environment and Climate Change Minister Catherine McKenna [pictured] expressing support for the 1.5° limit and making it clear that the country would develop a plan to deliver on its Paris commitments.

Paris renewables‘The Canadian delegation also pushed hard and effectively for an agreement that recognized human rights and the rights of Indigenous peoples, as well as the right to a just transition for fossil fuel workers.

cop21 protest‘The agreement also calls for continuing financial support over time to help vulnerable countries adapt to the impacts of climate change and shift their economies to renewable energy. And it opens a conversation about providing support to countries that suffer loss and damage due to the unavoidable impacts of climate change.

justin trudeau‘Any international agreement is bound to be limited by the dynamics and complexities of building consensus among 195 countries and multiple negotiating blocs…. [Nevertheless, Canadian Prime Minister] Trudeau has promised to deliver within 90 days’.
