Rosa Parks

<note to self>

fogo-boatswe watched a documentary about fogo island (newfoundland), with its many rocky outcrops and steps–not a place for wheelchairs. but does enabling disability mean a ‘flattening of culture’? i’m disabled. our town is trying to provide paratransit service, like toronto has. as an artist, i like what HTML (hyper-text markup language, the stuff behind webpages) offers technically, but i worry that this technology universally ‘flattens’ the experience. mondrian artmaybe that’s why the some of the abstract paintings i did in high school didn’t have smooth, straight lines (a-la piet mondrian [1872-1944], pictured). they were a little bit rough, the artist’s hand evident. when you go to mcdonald’s, it could be here, it could be there, it could be anywhere–the epitome of flattening. however, when you go to the mom-and-pop shop, it’s unique, like fogo. now i have other concerns, but the smooth lines still bother me.

michael hedgesOne of my favourite Who songs, redone by Michael Hedges (1953-1997), Eminence Front. He’s famous for ‘tapping’, though it must serve the music (not be just a guitar technique) he explains, along with a little yoga and much playing.

Rosa_Parks_(detail).tiff-FROM-WPIt’s a busy day. Following the mass consumerism of Black Friday and Cyber Monday, it’s Giving Tuesday, in recognition of volunteers. Also on this day, sixty years ago, Rosa Parks (1913-2005–pictured; notice Martin Luther King in the background), black, refused to give up her bus-seat to a white in Montgomery, beginning events that involved civil disobedience, Martin Luther King (1929-1968), the patrick mckennaUS Civil Rights Act, and more. in our house it’s comedy tv night. we watched canada over the edge, rick mercer, 22 minutes, and “everything you think you know about ADD and ADHD is wrong”. okay. canada on the edge isn’t funny, but the rest are, especially the one about ADD, Hamilton-appealing2which featured patrick mckenna (1960–pictured–you know, red green and hard rock medical). we learned lots, including that a little humour goes a long way, which cop21 delegates need (below). speaking of humour, reading about the sardonic 1956 collage, just what is it that makes today’s homes so different, so appealing?

mnvw mallAt the Mountainview Mall,  many stores are being evicted, some after decades of being there. The new owners want to turn it into a strip-mall. Browsing on-line is not the same. It offers poor customer service and you can’t hold potential purchases in your hands. What will become of the employees?

fogowatched two docs on architecture: architecture on fogo island (look closely: see the studio among the rocks and waves?) and coast modern. the architect on fogo knows the rocks have been here billions of years, but the buildings will not last. that’s humbling.

Rainer Maria Rilke, 1900Today is the birthday of Rainer Maria Rilke (1875-1926). He wrote a cycle of ‘poems that he called The Duino Elegies, about the difference between angels and people, and the meaning of death, and his idea that human beings are put on earth in order to experience the beauty of ordinary things.’

anwrIn 1960, the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge was created…, a pristine environment featuring six different ecosystems, 200 species of bird, 42 species of fish, and 45 mammal species, including 120,000 head of caribou…. The area remained, and remains, under constant siege by lobbyists and oil industry, determined to access the resources buried beneath the land. anwr-river 1In 2015, President Obama recommended to Congress that 12.28 million additional acres, including the Coastal Plain, be designated as protected wilderness. The Gwich’in people still inhabit this area. They are dependent upon the caribou and call the Coastal Plain The Sacred Place Where Life Begins.’
