Joy!

<notes to self>

trying something new: multiple notes.

connecteddeep ecology is both spiritual and scientific. true, you have to believe in things like quantum mechanics and the big bang, but after that, it’s inescapable that we’re all connected. religion and science are sometimes opposed, but not always. as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be…

liberal-cabinet-20151104--jody wilson-raybould, min of justice and attorney-general-from cbchalf the cabinet is female. okay, it’s only been about ninety years that women have had the vote in canada, a mere drop in the bucket when you take the long, long, long view. but right here right now it’s huge. and it makes a difference not only in cabinet but in our lives too. (pictured is jody wilson-raybould being sworn in as minister of justice and attorney general.)

zorn_basic_color_chart-from michaellynnadams.comthe zorn palette has just four colours: cadmium red, yellow ochre, ivory black, and titanium white. which may be fine for interior portraiture, but outdoors in full sun you need true greens for plants and real blues for sea and sky. in other words, for almost everything on this planet.

ftdeath is not a popular subject in our culture, but as a custodian of the family tree and with a memorial to my brother (who died in 1968) in the backyard, i face it daily. i know i’m going to die. so will you. knowing this makes this moment dearer.

BerlinermauerTwo or three history lessons, culminating in music. On this night Kristallnacht, a precursor to Jews being sent to concentration camps, happened in Germany in 1938. After the war Germany was partitioned into East and West, including its capitol, Berlin. Berlin eventually was separated by the Berlin Wall in 1961. But it came down, also on this day, in 1989. ‘On Christmas morning of 1989, six weeks after the opening of the Berlin Wall, 71-year-old Leonard Bernstein 1971-2Leonard Bernstein (1918-1990) conducted a performance in Berlin of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, with the words “Ode to Joy” [check out this link; it gets really relevant at 2:52] changed to “Ode to Freedom.” His orchestra and choir were made up of citizens from East and West Germany, France, the Soviet Union, England, and the United States. It was the first Christmas in decades that East and West Berliners could cross freely between the sides of the city, and many did so that day, waiting in lines for hours to get across.’

‘Although an original member of the Group, Johnston’s association was brief. He did exhibit in the exhibition of 1920, but by 1921 he had left Toronto.’ Also, I once lived in a log cabin he built in the 1930s. More paintings…

Rose_Elizabeth_Bird-from wpi missed rose bird (1936-1999), chief justice of the california supreme court, whose birthday was yesterday (november second). she said, ‘we have probed the earth, excavated it, burned it, ripped things from it, buried things in it, chopped down its forests, leveled its hills, muddied its waters, and dirtied its air. that does not fit my definition of a good tenant. if we were here on a month-to-month basis, we would have been evicted long ago.’

david crystalLinguist David Crystal writes of ‘the story circulating in the press this week, that the origin of the Australian accent lies in the drunken speech of the first convicts…. It’s complete bollocks. Rubbish…. It’s yet another example of how the tabloid media masquerades fiction as fact’.

Joni Mitchell 2004 140x190It’s the birthday of Joni Mitchell (1943), born Roberta Joan Anderson in Fort Macleod, Alberta. ‘She married, moved to Detroit and then to New York City, where she found the folk scene heavily weighted toward men.’ However, in 1966, at the Newport Folk Festival, though Mitchell was an unknown when she walked on the stage, after she was done, ‘the audience was dead silent. Then they broke into applause and gave her a standing ovation. Mitchell was 23 years old.’ (Pictured in 2004.)

joy of cookingbj overnight. while she slept, i read about joy of cooking, ‘privately published in 1931 by irma s. rombauer, a homemaker in st. louis, missouri, who was struggling emotionally and financially after her husband’s suicide the previous year.’ i’m thinking it might be a good christmas present, a hearty soup for the soul, like it must have been for irma rombauer.

MANET - Música en las Tullerías (National Gallery, Londres, 1862)Ivory black, sometimes called bone black, used to be made from charred tusks, now from animal bones. ‘Actual ivory is no longer used because of the expense and because animals who are natural sources of ivory are subject to international control as endangered species.’ In this painting, Manet used lots of ivory black.
