Walden Revisited

<note to self>

Thoreau-from-wcis there an afterlife, or is this it? i dunno, but might as well be pleasant in this one, whether there is a next one or not. also, if there is an afterlife, is there a divinity behind it? and is that divinity involved or not? who’s to say? would i trust some authority, like the pope or the bible? would i trust a revelation? might either an authority or a revelation be just part of my brain talking to another part, a mere psychological event? or is that event really the divine talking to me? if the latter, maybe the divine communicates with me in strange coincidences. for example, right now i’m revisiting thoreau’s walden (thoreau pictured, 1856, as well as a recreation of his home in the woods). this morning, august 9, the following came (from the writer’s almanac): ‘On this day in 1854, Henry David Thoreau [1817-1862] … published Walden; or, Life in the Woods.’ weird, eh? hut3(if you read it, you may want to modernize it by reading ken kipher’s notes, below.) i mean, there i am reading the book, and i get this unbidden email about it. spooky. holy moly, or holy ghost? and if there is an afterlife, maybe thoreau knows by now. maybe not.

Ken Kiferi’m at karen and annie’s while susan is in new brunswick. monday night, dinner with them, annie‘s sister jeannie, jeannie’s daughter, and d’arcy. then, chess with d’arce, who slept in ‘bluebell’, his vw camper-van. next day, more chess. later, reading about writers andre dubus (1936-1999), struck by a car and ended up in a wheelchair, and ken kifer (pictured–1945-2003), ‘admirer of Henry David Thoreau’, killed by a drunk driver while riding his bicycle near his home. not just death and injury but climate change too. one way or another, they’ll get us. i ask you, what is this obsession with cars?

Henry David Thoreau - Dunshee ambrotpe 1861Sometimes one thing leads to another, such as Walden leading to Ken Kifer’s guide. He writes, ‘I sincerely believe that Thoreau put his finger on the primary weaknesses of the American culture…. A Thoreauvian lifestyle not only can make our individual lives more worthwhile but it can also help preserve our planet.’ (pictured is thoreau, 1861)
