Holy Cosmos

<note to self>

Edward Jenner by James Northcotethe first vaccine, for smallpox, was tested in 1796. its creator, dr edward jenner, is said to have ‘saved more lives than the work of any other human’. as a kid, i was inoculated against things like measles, mumps, and rubella. recently, i had a new vaccine against shingles. but didn’t these diseases help keep our numbers in check? now with things like sanitation and stable food supply and vaccines, aren’t we in danger of overpopulating? or is there a vaccine for that too?

Milkweed_Asclepias_syriaca_Plant_2000px-from-wcMilkweed leaves ‘are the only food source for monarch butterfly larvae and other milkweed butterflies. These plants are therefore often used in butterfly gardening.’ Another article notes that gardeners ‘will often replace the expended milkweed with a slice of pumpkin’.

12 moons of the yearHal Borland (1900-1978), a columnist with the NY Times: ‘One walks, seemingly alone with the night and the universe. But as the dusk deepens the eight-hoot call of the barred owl is heard from the far hillside. Then silence again, and one hears one’s own footsteps in the leaf-strewn road. A farm dog barks in the distance and on the highway down the valley a truck growls into a lower gear for the long grade over the hilltop. And now the silent stars gleam beyond the thinning treetops.

The owl eight-hoots again and one knows he is not alone, even in the starlit immensity of the autumn night.’–Twelve Moons of the Year.

Borg1before i read the bible again, maybe i should read some of the leading biblical scholars, like marcus borg (1942-2015), who described himself ‘as a nonliteralistic and nonexclusionistic Christian, committed to living my life with God within the Christian tradition, even as I affirm the validity of all enduring religious traditions.’–From the Introduction to Reading The Bible Again For The First Time

st-francis-of-assisiRohr writes, ‘The world of Francis [of Assissi] is a much larger world where sun, moon, animals, plants, and elements are all shown reverence and even personal subjectivity as “brother” and “sister.” He is the patron saint of ecology, animals, and peacemaking’.

The_Social_Animal_(David_Brooks_book)‘But he [Harold, a central character] sensed that what he needed was more community, connection, and interpenetration. He couldn’t bring out his best alone. He could only do it in conjunction with other people.’–The Social Animal, pp.197-198.

.

st-francis-of-assisiRohr writes, Francis of Assissi tried ‘to dialogue with the “enemy” during the tragic Crusades against Muslims in the Holy Land, telling the Christians they were wrong for being there! He is truly a universal man, addressing the same issues that are still urgent and important in our own time.’
