Both Sides Now

<note to self>

Bacteria photomicrograph

you know, there are at least two sides to every story. like, why do multicellular organisms die? why aren’t they immortal? (though a handful–such as certain fungi–don’t die.) if our cells didn’t die, if each did everything and not specialize, we wouldn’t have organs, we wouldn’t have fingers and toes. (not sure if i’d miss my spleen, but i’d miss my fingers and toes.) moreover, we’d have run-away conditions, like cancer. those are some clues why they die. but how are they born? actually, individual cells aren’t ‘born’, they just divide, creating new cells. all of my cells came from one egg, which came from my mother, which came from her mother, which came from her mother, which came from her mother, going back millions, billions of years. Giant_cells1(think of *that* on mother’s day!) there are ancient cells in you. and some bacteria (potentially immortal, single-celled organisms) have been around as long as life has been around. but where does life come from in the first place? and what happens next? perhaps those questions are outside the realm of science.
