Woke Up

<note to self>

geese-from-ducks-unlimitedwoke up… not to the sound of birds, but to some guy on cbc radio saying, if we want the sound of birds we must protect our boreal forest. the boreal forest stretches from the atlantic to the pacific. it’s closer than you think, for birds migrate through our backyards, or even summer here and raise their young. it’s ‘a keystone habitat for the hemisphere’s migratory waterfowl and songbird populations.’ it also ‘supports vast populations of fish and other wildlife.’ boreal-map-from-ducks-unlimitedand ‘as the world’s most extensive terrestrial carbon sink and largest reservoir of surface water, [it] plays a critical role in regulating global climate.’ unlike ‘the world’s other great wilderness areas, … [it] is governed by two of the world’s richest and most stable democracies, [which makes it] the best place on earth to secure large-scale conservation and sustainable development through the proactive application of conservation science and enlightened resource management principles.’ birders! your passion depends on the boreal forest! maybe i should wake up to this radio station more often.

John_Updike_with_Bushes_new-from-wpIt’s Susan’s birthday. It’s also John Updike’s (1932-2009). He said, ‘Smaller than a breadbox, bigger than a TV remote, the average book fits into the human hand with a seductive nestling, a kiss of texture, whether of cover cloth, glazed jacket, or flexible paperback.’

vanier-from-jean-vanier.orgJean Vanier reminds us that ‘Love is doing nothing which bruises others; it is putting the interests of others above our own. It is not being irritable, bitter, aggressive or searching for the evil in others; it is not rejoicing in injustice. It is seeking truth in all things.’

Fred Rogers, late 1960sIt’s the birthday of Fred (Mr) Rogers (1928-2003), who said, ‘We live in a world in which we need to share responsibility. It’s easy to say “It’s not my child, not my community, not my world, not my problem.” Then there are those who see the need and respond. I consider those people my heroes.’

.

train-from-dsfMust be Friday–lots of stuff in my inbox, like ‘despite taking up less land space [as we become more urban], our environmental impact continues to grow. As the UN notes, cities cover only two per cent of the world’s land area but produce 60% of CO2 emissions’. Investing in public transit makes sense.

chernradsign-from-beyondnuclear.orgAnd, Ontario ‘maintains a nuclear focus despite the high cost, the lack of a waste storage solution, and the possibility of nuclear disaster in Canada’s most densely populated region.’ But Ontario has options.

cdnsAnd, a majority of Canadians oppose Bill C-51, for it’s ‘too vague, goes too far, and will undermine the rights and freedoms of citizens.’
