Love The One You’re With

<note to self>

phcrules and chance. here’s a rule or three. it’s well-known that the only constant in the vast universe is change. or is it? the peaceful warrior (dan millman) adds humour and paradox. and not just any humour–a sense of humour that’s within, for it’s a strength beyond measure. and he says that for paradox, life is a mystery, so don’t waste your time trying to figure it out.

space-from-wikimedia.orgwhat about that most mysterious paradox that changes everything, love? noted astronomer and tv host carl sagan once said, ‘for small creatures such as we the vastness is bearable only through love.’ perhaps the only rule in a universe of chance, as steven stills wisely sang, is to love the one you’re with.

Einstein 1921 by F Schmutzer - restorationToday is the birthday of Albert Einstein (1879-1955). In 1905 he published his ‘Special Theory of Relativity, which states that absolute space and absolute time don’t exist; they are relative to each other, and should be represented as “space-time.” The only universal constant is the speed of light’. He published his General Theory of Relativity in 1916. Fascinating, but to this day I can’t figure it out.

Lyndon B. Johnson, photo portrait, leaning on chair, color croppedOn this day fifty years ago Johnson ‘gave a speech demanding legislation to guarantee equal voting rights for all Americans. Eight days earlier, on March 7th, 600 people had started marching east out of Selma, Alabama…. [They] made it only six blocks. As they crossed the Edmund Pettus Bridge over the Alabama River, they were violently attacked…. Legislation for a new voting rights bill was already in the works, and … pressure mounted for Johnson to unveil the bill…. [In the speech,] Johnson used the phrase “we shall overcome,” invoking the protest song that had become a civil rights anthem. He said: “Their cause must be our cause, too, because it’s not just Negroes, but really, it’s all of us who must overcome the crippling legacy of bigotry and injustice. And we shall overcome.” … The following Sunday, 3,000 marchers set off once again from Selma. They reached Montgomery five days later. After arriving in Montgomery, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. addressed the crowd and said: “The Civil Rights Act of 1964 gave Negroes some part of their rightful dignity, but without the vote it was dignity without strength.” Johnson signed the Voting Rights Act in August of 1965.’

Richard-Rohr_home-view-from-cacWhy do I like Richard Rohr? Because (a) he ties together theology and quantum physics; (b) he’s a leftish, peace-promoting, ecumenical Roman Catholic; (c) I learn tons. For example: his Church History professor said, ‘ “Christianity was much more formed by Plato than it was by Jesus.” We knew that in Platonic philosophy, matter and spirit are utterly separate and even enemies. Plato could not put body and spirit/soul together. This dualism is the most common world view even today, and yet quantum physics now reveals this division to be entirely untrue in the very structure of the universe. In Jesus, matter and spirit were presented as totally one. Human and Divine were put together in his ordinary body, just as in the rest of humanity…. Two thousand years later this is still a scandal for most of the world. It just doesn’t seem “spiritual” enough!’
