Washburn And Fleck

note to self

BXP135677sometimes i experience unpleasantness. then it’s very tempting to just throw up my hands and say, ‘this is crazy’, or ‘it’s all too much’, or ‘this too shall pass’. yet i have to remember that, while my individual experience may be unique, it’s not necessarily universal. maybe what i experience is totally different than what somebody else would experience in the same situation. i don’t know. nevertheless, we all share in a complex culture, complex language, complex learning. sometimes it takes many generations to build up our understanding of things, way more than an individual’s lifetime, no matter how unique that life was or how great was his or her achievement. life is a matter of accepting the baton from the previous generation and passing it on to the next. for example, it has taken thousands of years to achieve our current understanding of the universe, from euclid, galileo, newton, apartment, bohr, and many, many more to who knows in the future. Einstein1921 by F Schmutzer 2it’s a mystery what we’ll believe by the end of the century, or in a hundred years, a thousand years. so i have a choice: while it may be tempting to throw up my hands and say ‘this is crazy’, or ‘it’s all too much’, or ‘this too shall pass’, i can choose to stick with it and pass the baton. actually, i can say any of those things and still pass the baton. but not throw up my hands. then i lose the baton.

TomWolfe02Tom Wolfe said there are four technical devices ‘that give fiction its absorbing or gripping quality, that make the reader feel present in the scene described and even inside the skin of a particular character’: 1) constructing scenes; 2) dialogue—lots of it; 3) carefully noting social status details; 4) point of view

Joshua Sherurcij [Attribution], via Wikimedia CommonsDavid Suzuki doesn’t like Bill C-51, or the RCMP report that calls climate change protesters terrorists. He concludes, ‘Pollution and climate change caused by excessive burning of fossil fuels are real threats, not the people who warn that we must take these threats seriously. And while we must also respond to terrorism with the strong tools already in place, we have to remember that our rights and freedoms, not fear, are what keep us strong.’

edwar-keenan-from-tEdward Keenan writes that the bill satirizes itself, for it fights restrictions on freedom and tolerance with restrictions on freedom and tolerance.

Clearly, this allocation of resources is not in line with values held by Canadians across the country.’
