Richard-Rohr_NapaRichard Rohr believes ‘we have found a most clever way to honor the prophets into insignificance. They’re really harmless when we make their message simply, “They foretold the coming of the Messiah.” [However,] prophets step in to disrupt the usual social consensus’.

vanier-from-jean-vanier.orgJean Vanier notes that ‘warfare is inside my own community…. But warfare is also in me…. Healing begins here, in myself. Wholeness and unity begin inside of myself. If I am growing toward wholeness, then I’ll be an agent of wholeness.’

Arrhenius2-from-wpIf internal warfare is not your thing, how about something external? Today is the birthday of Svante Arrhenius (1859-1927), the first to note the relationship between atmospheric carbon and temperature.

4945784094_43a7df1123_b-thumb-480xauto-5561-from-dsfMy niece, 22, is in Germany right now, learning organic farming. The future is with her, as it is with all of us. The future is always with us, as it was in 1992. David Suzuki writes, ‘When she was just 12 years old, my daughter Severn gave a speech at the 1992 UN Earth Summit in Rio de Janiero, Brazil. She spoke with such conviction that delegates were moved to tears. It was one of my proudest moments as a father. More than 20 years later, Severn is the mother of two young children, and the video of her speech is still making the rounds, inspiring people around the world. Its popularity speaks to the power the young have to affect the world’s most pressing issues….

Young Greens of CanadaAcross the nation, youth are thinking critically about how we can become better stewards of our vast landscapes and spectacular wildlife and protect the air, water, soil and diversity of nature’.

Our mayor, gord mckayGord McKay, writes: ‘Last Friday a dedicated group of men (and one woman) met to take action on building respectful relations between men and women. Men’s violence towards women is endemic in our society. Changing that situation has to start with each of us. Look for a public launch event in May where the real men will stand up to take a pledge and action against violence towards women.’

Samuel PepysOne of the reasons I blog is in the example set by Samuel Pepys, born in London on this day in 1633 (died 1703-05-26). ‘Thanks to Pepys and his diaries, we have a fairly clear picture of 17th-century Restoration England; without his observations and accounts, historians would have had to rely on the single, government-run newspaper operating in London at that time, and that paper was subject to censorship.’

GutenbergBy the way, printing of the Gutenberg Bible began (also on this day, but in 1455). Now we have things like texting and Facebook. Printing ‘is widely regarded as the most important event of the modern period. It played a key role in the development of the Renaissance, Reformation, the Age of Enlightenment, and the Scientific revolution and laid the material basis for the modern knowledge-based economy and the spread of learning to the masses’. Nowadays folks mostly keyboard. But I suspect Pepys wrote his diary.

The guide now contains over 200 entries for places to get DRM-free ebooks, movies, and music…, [including] Rebellion Publishing, which sells graphic novels and comics.’
