Deepwater-Horizon-1000w-from-seashepherd.orgOn April 20th four years ago, the ‘Deepwater Horizon oil rig exploded…. BP then further aggravated the situation by pouring 2 million gallons of chemical dispersants into the Gulf to break up and sink the oil. The oil, now dispersed into the food chain, became up to 52 times more toxic…. Ocean Alliance has been studying the long term effects of the crude oil and dispersants on sea life in the Gulf. Now Sea Shepherd is partnering with Ocean Alliance to keep this work going and bring the public’s attention onto the disaster and its effect on the environment.’

curvy-slide-from-poetryfoundation.org-by-chris-raschkaWhat’s a slide got to with poetry? ‘Poetry is like a curvy slide in a playground,’ writes Lemony Snicket, ‘an odd object, available to the public–and, as I keep explaining to my local police force, everyone should be able to use it, not just those of a certain age.’

Wag isaac newton

On this day in 1687 Isaac Newton published ‘one of the most important books in the history of science, Philosophiae Naturalis Principia Mathematica‘. 250 years later, also on this day, Hormel unveiled SPAM. ‘There’s no consensus on what the name actually stands for; one theory is that it’s a combination of “spiced meat” and “ham.” SPAM and EggsIn Britain, where it was a popular wartime food, they called it “Specially Processed American Meat”….  A host of tongue-in-cheek acronyms have also arisen, like “Something Posing As Meat,” and “Special Product of Austin, Minnesota.” Whatever it stands for, Hormel specifies that it should be written in all caps.’ Monty Python sang of ‘wonderful SPAM‘, but not-so-wonderful emails are also called spam. Wonderful or not, I guess SPAM’s as important as the Principia. BTW, in my books, SPAM=Simple Poems Are Marvelous.

Frederica Annis Lopez de Leo de Laguna (1906-2004), standing and talking at meeting with Kaj Birket-Smith (1893-1977)we watched fry’s planet word. humans have complex speech organs and large brains. other animals use hoots and hollers, dances and clicks–signs–to communicate things like ‘food over here’, ‘predator over there’, but only humans use signs creatively, and as far as we can tell, empathically. there are 7000 living languages, each one as sophisticated as your own, and each one the unique embodiment and expression of its culture. but their extinction rate (far greater than the biological extinction rate), fry says is due to globalisation, which he gets into next week.

RichardRohr-from-cac.orgIn our culture’s creation myth, Rohr points out, ‘God created human beings in God’s own image, and we’ve returned the compliment, so to speak, creating God in our image…. In America, God looks like Uncle Sam or Santa Claus, or in any case a white Anglo-Saxon male, even though it states in Genesis 1:27 that “God created humankind in God’s own image; male and female God created them.” That clearly states that God cannot be strictly or merely masculine.’
