The People of the Kattawapiskak River

People of Kattawapiskak_1-from-tvoTonight at 10 on TVO. ‘In October 2011, chief Theresa Spence of the Attawapiskat First Nation in northern Ontario declared a state of emergency because of the deplorable living conditions in her community.  Homes on this isolated Cree reserve had gaping holes in the walls and floors, no electricity, sewage lines, heating or insulation in sub-freezing temperatures that could fall below -40 degrees.  The housing conditions on the reserve made international headlines and ignited a firestorm of debate around the realities of extreme poverty in one of the world’s wealthiest countries.  Award-winning filmmaker Alanis Obomsawin takes us inside the overcrowded homes and make-shift shacks to speak to residents and examines the history and causes of the crisis.’
