letter to the editor re kevin page

When Prime Minister Harper ran for office in 2006, he created the Parliamentary Budget Office so Canadians would know what our government is doing with our money. Kevin Page, our first federal budget watchdog, showed that he could hold government accountable for fiscal mismanagement. But Prime Minister Harper let Kevin Page’s term expire just before his government released the 2013 budget, and the process to replace him is veiled in secrecy. If our government thinks they can hide their plans from public scrutiny they will be more likely to do things Canadians don’t want. Prime Minister Harper has to choose: either he can run an open process to pick a strengthened Parliamentary Budget Officer, or he’s proving to Canadians that his government can’t stand up to real fiscal oversight. image from the star.
