‘[silent spring] made it clear that toxicity played no favorites, though industry did, with the poor often paying the price.’ (blessed unrest, 58-59.) while a sand county almanac in 1949 introduced ‘ecology’–the science of organisms in their habitat, of connections between organisms–silent spring in 1962 made the connection personal, made it human, made it real. it re-integrated social justice and environmentalism. silent spring was reviled by corporations and those in their pay. such attacks probably hastened carson‘s death, of cancer, in 1964.
