in 1948, leopold wrote, ‘there are two spiritual dangers in not owning a farm. one is supposing that breakfast comes from a grocery, and the other that heat comes from a furnace,’ A Sand County Almanac, 6-7.
i never owned a farm, but as a kid i grew up in farming county, and for a couple of years as an adult lived in farming county. well ran dry in the summer. oil tank ran dry in the winter. both times you could say endangered my spirit.
