[they read new] books dedicated to the discussion and reinterpretation of the old books…. it was no longer the meaning of all the words … but the words themselves…. this was either a brilliant stroke by the academics, producing ever more material to be scrutinized and reassessed, or a fatal miscalculation….’ kind of like going off the gold standard, it’s more unreal.
