  • 12th century–harvested in Kaffa, Ethiopia
  • 14th century–traded in Middle East
  • 16th & 17th centuries–spread to Europe, replacing spirits such as gin; people sobered up and revolted
  • 18th & 19th centuries–slavery and coffee plantations go together, go global
    • the Dutch in Indonesia
    • the British and French in the Caribbean
    • the Portuguese in Brazil
  • 1773–the Boston Tea Party–drinking tea is un-American; drink coffee! (anecdotal)
  • 19th century–slavery ends, but colonialism continues
  • 1886–corporations recognized as natural persons by USA
  • 20th century–colonialism replaced by world trade
  • 1946–the Mennonites start Self-Help Crafts, which today is Ten Thousand Villages
  • 1950–Oxfam–alternative trade, justice, not charity
  • 1965Unsafe at Any Speed by Ralph Nader; the little guy takes on the big corporation; Nader starts consumer power
  • 1989–The World Fair Trade Organization (WFTO), formerly the International Fair Trade Association (IFTA), created
  • 1991–collapse of the International Coffee Agreement
  • 1999–World Trade Organization (WTO) in Seattle
  • 2001–FTAA in Quebec City
